Five Nights at Freddy's is a survival revulsion computer game with point-and-click elements.[1] The player acts as a night security guard for a unreal pizza eating house, and moldiness complete their shift that lasts from midnight to 6:00 a.m. (several minutes now) without being jumpscared by the four animatronic characters that live the quickness.[2]

The player, alone in an office, is given access to a meshing of security camera feeds that provide views of various parts of the restaurant.[3] These feeds are exploited to track the movement of the mobile animatronics passim the night. Each animatronic character has distinct movement patterns, and most of this movement takes place off-screen.[4] [5] The photographic camera feeds are poorly lit and coarse, and one security camera, located in the kitchen, just provides an audio frequency feed.[3] The cameras make non cover certain areas of the building, most notably the two hallways directly to the left and right of the player, which require checking aside lights that the player can control by clicking a button located adjacent to each door in their office.[3] The player cannot leave the office, and must warm the office staff doors for self-defence, as wel achieved by clicking buttons adjacent to apiece doorway.[2]

Use of these mechanics consume the player's limited electrical power; if all the index is exhausted, the cameras become unserviceable, the doors open and the lights go out.[4] [6] The restaurant's important animatronic, Freddy Fazbear, will subsequently appear in the socialist doorway with bright lights in his eyes spell a musical box rendition of "Toreador March" plays.[2] After a random amount of time, the office will go lurch black and Freddy will jumpscare the role player, resulting in the game ending, unless the player makes it to 6 a.m. in front this occurs. If the player is jumpscared by any of the animatronics, they must restart from the beginning of the dark.[3]

The game has fivesome levels comprising quintuplet "nights" in the game, each increasing in difficulty.[2] Finishing the main game unlocks a higher difficulty sixth night,[2] the completion of which subsequently opens up a ordinal "impost night" during which the histrion can set the AI difficulty of the animatronic characters.[3] In the game's most embarrassing challenge, all animatronics are set to their highest tied of 20 (often referred to As 20/20/20/20 mode or 4/20 mode).[7]

Players control Mike Schmidt, who has signed a contract for position as a night security officer at a family-directed pizza restaurant called "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza pie".[8] A voicemail message from Microphone's predecessor plays each night, in which he explains different aspects of the account of the restaurant.[4] He explains that the eating place's quaternary animatronic characters – Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy – become mobile at night because their servomotors will lock up if they are nigh off for too long.[9] The employee warns Microphone that if one of the animatronics encounters a human afterwards hours, information technology will misapprehension them for an animatronic endoskeleton without a costume and will "forcefully shove" them into a spare mechanical Freddy Fazbear costume, killing the person in the process.[10]

End-to-end the pun, newspaper clippings viewable in the camera feeds and stories mentioned in the voice messages divulge worrying incidents that occurred in the restaurant's history. The voice message mentions "The Bite of '87", an omissible which is inexplicit to have led to the loss of a person's frontal lobe and unvoluntary animatronic mobility during the day to live prohibited.[11] Newspaper clippings in the restaurant's east hallway corner reveal that a polish off was reported to have occurred on-website, where a human being wearing a suit of one of the animatronic characters allegedly lured cardinal children into a back room before putting to death them. Later, the restaurant received complaints that the animatronics began to emit foul odors while blood and mucus leaked from their eyes and mouths, with united customer comparing them to "reanimated carcasses", implying that the children's corpses were stuffed inside the animatronics.[12]

After the one-fourth dark, Mike no longer receives voice messages from his predecessor, WHO is silent to have been killed by same of the animatronics spell transcription the fourth message.[13] A voice message still plays on the fifth night, but information technology only consists of a garbling reasoned.[14] Upon complemental the fifth and sixth nights, Mike receives paychecks,[15] [16] but he is fired at one time the seventh "custom night" is completed.[17]
